Cox's Plate moves but venue to be decided

The Moonee Valley Racing Club is on track to finalize the venue for the 2026 Cox Plate by mid-year, following a thorough tender process to determine the most suitable location.

According to club CEO Michael Browell, the coveted slot, made available due to extensive track renovations at The Valley, is likely to be awarded to one of Melbourne's other two clubs. However, Browell emphasized that the selection process will be open to all.

"We'll initiate an expression of interest process in the coming months to decide where our race meetings, including the 2026 Ladbrokes Cox Plate, will take place during the closure period," Browell explained.

The club intends to select the venue that presents the strongest bid. Browell highlighted ongoing discussions with potential hosts, primarily metropolitan clubs, as they approach the end of the Autumn Carnival.

Timing is crucial for The Valley, with the focus on retaining the scheduled date for the Cox Plate in spring 2026. Browell outlined potential options, including hosting the event at Caulfield post-Caulfield Cup Carnival, a week before the Flemington carnival, or at another suitable location.

After the closure of the current Valley track following the 2025 Cox Plate, the race will relocate for a year before returning to a revamped Valley course in 2027.

Acknowledging the considerations of both the Melbourne Racing Club and Victoria Racing Club, Browell emphasized the challenges they face in submitting bids for the Cox Plate.

Discussions with Racing Victoria will be crucial in finalizing arrangements, with Browell anticipating the release of next season's race dates by May or June, providing ample time for a smooth transition and maximizing opportunities for the 2026 carnival.
