Autumn Glow, the daughter of star South African mare Via Africa. lived up to expectations by dominating the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on Saturday, securing her second consecutive win and maintaining an undefeated record.
Trained by Chris Waller and expertly ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, the filly settled perfectly in a midfield position with cover, making the most of a genuine pace throughout the race. As Axius ($7.50) and Wanaruah ($5.50) fought for the early lead, McEvoy bided his time, just as he did in her debut, before unleashing Autumn Glow in the final 400 meters.
In the closing stages, she accelerated impressively, leaving her rivals behind, with only James Cummings' Snack Bar ($10.00) making any significant progress from the back of the field.
Waller praised Autumn Glow as a "very serious horse" and confirmed that decisions about her next steps, including a potential move to the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m), would be left to her owners. Although Waller hinted that taking on top-level competition like Storm Boy might be a bit premature, he acknowledged the filly's impressive progression.
McEvoy was equally impressed, noting that Autumn Glow has a "very high ceiling" and still has room for growth. Currently, Autumn Glow is listed at $9.00 for the Group 1 Golden Rose on September 28.
