Champion Mare Black Caviar Dies

It is with heavy hearts that the Madden, Hawkes, Wilkie, Taylor, and Werrett families announce the peaceful passing of the legendary mare, Black Caviar.

Black Caviar was a once-in-a-lifetime horse, renowned for an extraordinary racing career that saw her undefeated with 25 wins from 25 starts. Since retiring from racing, she enjoyed further success as a broodmare, ensuring her legacy lives on through her offspring. She had a short battle with laminitis.

The ownership group is deeply saddened by this loss, but they take comfort in her remarkable achievements, both in Australia, where she became a national icon, and internationally, most notably in England, where she famously secured victory in the 2012 Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Trainer Peter Moody fondly reflected on his time with Black Caviar, stating, “She was a remarkable horse who gave us all the ride of a lifetime and wonderful memories.”

The ownership group would like to extend their gratitude to all who cared for Black Caviar during her racing career and retirement, including veterinarians Amy Duff, Joan Carrick, and the team at Scone Equine Hospital led by Troy Butt and Peter Carrigan, as well as Mick Malone, Pauline Alix, and the entire team at North. Special thanks also go to Peter Moody and his racing team for their dedication during her racing career, and to jockey Luke Nolen, who guided her to 23 of her 25 victories.

Black Caviar would have celebrated her 18th birthday tomorrow, Sunday, August 18th. She will be remembered and celebrated by all who knew and loved her.

Victoria Racing Club (VRC) Chairman Neil Wilson expressed his condolences on behalf of the VRC, saying, “Today’s news is a shock to us all. Black Caviar was more than a champion racehorse; she was an integral part of many lives. Her brilliance, presence, and the joy she brought to so many were unforgettable. She created a piece of history that will be cherished forever, and it was a privilege for all who witnessed her incredible performances.”

Wilson added, “The VRC was honored to have Black Caviar race at Flemington and to name the Lightning Stakes after her in 2013, a race she won three times, including the first year it was held in her honor. Our deepest condolences go out to those close to her, including our friends in the ownership group. To Black Caviar’s trainer Peter Moody and jockey Luke Nolen, our thoughts are with you on this sad day. She was simply the best.”

Black Caviar retired in 2013 after an undefeated career, boasting 25 wins, including 15 Group 1 races, and earnings of $7,953,936 in prize money.

The ownership group thanks the public for their support and kindly requests privacy during this difficult time.
