In an announcement that underscores the international ambitions of trainer Yoshihito Yahagi, two of his standout four-year-old colts, Shin Emperor and Forever Young, are poised for high-profile campaigns in Saudi Arabia and Dubai this season. Both horses will represent Yahagi's Ritto stable, aiming to enhance their burgeoning reputations on the global stage.
Shin Emperor Targets Saudi Arabia and Dubai
Shin Emperor, a son of Siyouni, caught the racing world's attention with a strong second-place finish in the prestigious Japan Cup. After a brief rest, he is set to return to action in the Neom Turf Cup (G2) at the King Abdulaziz Racecourse on February 22, tackling 2100m on turf. From there, his path leads to the Dubai Sheema Classic (G1) on April 5 at Meydan Racecourse, where he will step up to 12f on turf.
Trainer Yahagi confirmed the decision to bypass the Qatar Amir Trophy (G3) at Al Rayyan Racecourse, saying, “We chose the Saudi Arabia and Dubai route due to the left-handed courses and the scheduling advantage. The Dubai Sheema Classic being held later this year allows us to base ourselves in the region for over a month, ensuring a smooth preparation.”
Forever Young Eyes Dirt Domination
Forever Young, by Real Steel, enters the season on a high after a commanding victory in the Tokyo Daishoten. He is on track for a two-race campaign that mirrors his stablemate's timeline, starting in the Saudi Cup (February 22) over 1800m on dirt, before tackling the Dubai World Cup (G1) on April 5, covering 2000m on dirt at Meydan.
Yahagi emphasized the strategic benefits of keeping the two colts together: “With both Shin Emperor and Forever Young competing in Saudi Arabia and Dubai, we can streamline their training and adjustments. Having them in the same environment ensures consistency in their preparation," he emphasised when speaking to the media.
Global Aspirations
This dual-pronged campaign highlights Yahagi’s intent to make a mark on the world stage, a familiar pursuit for the trainer renowned for his international successes. With Shin Emperor’s versatility and Forever Young’s prowess on dirt, both colts are well-positioned to showcase the strength of Japanese racing.
