We've been vocal about how Rascova has been ridden in the past, but this time, with a jockey at the top of his game, she was finally rated like the quality horse she is and clinched a well-deserved Grade 1 victory - the Majorca Stakes over 1600m. Jockey Gavin Lerena take a bow!
Rascova, owned by Sandy and Eugene Arundel through their ITSSA company, delivered a stellar performance just off the pace of Fatal Flaw, the reigning Cape Fillies Guineas champion, who was carrying 5kg less under weight-for-age terms.
Settling behind the speed, Rascova had to contend with Double Grand Slam (Fourie), who was pulling and tugging in a slow-run race—very different from her last 1800m outing, which featured a much hotter tempo. The slower pace suited Rascova perfectly, allowing her to bide her time. Surprisingly, Fatal Flaw, who should have relished the conditions, faded out of contention as Double Grand Slam momentarily challenged for the lead.
But when it mattered, Rascova surged down the inside, flying home and refusing to be denied in one of the tightest finishes imaginable.
