Jockey Hits Jockey mid race in South Africa

A controversial incident in the second race at Turffontein on Sunday has sparked significant debate and will lead to an official inquiry involving title-chasing jockey Gavin Lerena.

The incident occurred when Lerena, riding Gimme A Storm (28-10), stood up in the irons and struck fellow jockey Jason Gates, aboard Blurred Vision (66-1), multiple times on the back with his crop.

A National Horseracing Authority (NHA) officials have mentioned that issues such as these will lead to an inquiry and will proceed without the option of an Admission of Guilt (AOG), emphasizing the seriousness of the matter.

The altercation happened as the two horses raced in close quarters in the home straight for a portion of the race. Lerena, wearing red and Gates in green, can be seen jostling in the run in.

The dramatic episode has prompted significant public reaction, with SAHorseracing receiving numerous responses from the racing community. The outcome of the inquiry will likely have implications for Lerena’s title ambitions and raises questions about professionalism and conduct in the sport.
