The Grade 1 sprinter Gimme A Prince proved he still has what it takes, overcoming a year marred by injuries and setbacks to reclaim his spot at the top with a scintillating performance.
Race favorite Dyce settled just behind a brisk pace set by the Gqeberha-based Cruise Control, with Surjay, the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint winner, also in the early mix. Trailing closely were Seeking The Stars and Cafe Culture, both well-positioned to strike. Meanwhile, Gimme A Prince, sitting comfortably four lengths off the leaders, was poised for his moment.
As the race unfolded, Cruise Control faded, leaving Surjay to battle with a flying Gimme A Prince, who surged down the inside with a devastating turn of foot. Dyce stayed on but lacked his usual kick, managing only fourth, while Lucky Lad closed well over a distance shorter than ideal.
But the day belonged to Gimme A Prince, who stormed clear to secure a commanding victory, reminding everyone of his brilliance.
Jockey Craig Zackey was full of praise:
"He isn’t just the best sprinter in the country; he could be one of the best in the world. Keagan De Melo told me that, and I felt it today."
Trainer Dean Kannemeyer added:
"This horse has always been special to me. He’s had his share of issues. I even tried the King’s Plate, but he didn’t stay despite leading with 250m to go. He won this race two years ago, and missing last year due to a knee fracture was tough. Today, he proved he’s back to his best."
