Jockey Marco van Rensburg suffered a significant injury during a tragic incident in the 6th race at Fairview today. Riding the honest and well-loved gelding Purple Operator, Van Rensburg was unseated after the horse broke down mid-race. The fall resulted in a broken arm for the experienced jockey, who was immediately attended to by on-course medical personnel. The racing community extends its thoughts and well-wishes to Van Rensburg as he begins his recovery.
The accident also led to the heartbreaking loss of Purple Operator, a six-year-old gelding. The horse, trained most recently by Cliffie Miller, suffered a catastrophic breakdown and was humanely euthanized on the track. Miller expressed his devastation over the loss, reflecting on Purple Operator loss. Duncan Howell was his previous trainer before transfering to the Eastern Cape.
