Masquerade Ball Ready to Meet Hong Kong's Best

Trainer Takahisa Tezuka has declared Masquerade Ball in peak condition ahead of Sunday's G1 FWD QEII Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin, with the four-year-old having acclimatised well to Hong Kong's heat and humidity on his first international assignment.

The transition was not seamless initially. Tezuka noted the horse's sensitivity to the conditions upon arrival, though a return to strong appetite has provided clear reassurance. "After he galloped, his appetite has been improving," Tezuka said. "I think, as I watched him this morning, he is in peak condition at the moment." Friday's trackwork was managed conservatively given the wet conditions, with instructions passed to the rider to ease back in deference to the rain-affected surface.

Masquerade Ball brings genuine Group 1 credentials to the HK$30 million contest — last year's Tenno Sho Autumn (2000m) winner who went agonisingly close in the Japan Cup (2400m), finishing runner-up. Despite that form, Tezuka is measured in his expectations against a field he describes with rare candour as "very, very brilliant." Romantic Warrior, Sosie and Royal Champion headline the opposition, and Tezuka is not understating the task. "Romantic Warrior is an exceptionally strong horse, a true hero in Hong Kong," he said. "I always feel we are the challenger."

Distance and Surface Questions

Two tactical variables frame the assignment. Masquerade Ball returns fresh at the start of his campaign, tackling a distance many regard as short of his best, while also racing right-handed for the first time since the G1 Satsuki Sho last April. Tezuka, however, is unconcerned on both counts. "I feel 2000 metres is suitable rather than 2400 metres," he said — a notable position given the horse's near-miss over the longer trip in Japan.

The prospect of a rain-affected track presents a genuine unknown. Masquerade Ball has no prior form on a wet surface, and Tezuka acknowledges it as a minor variable rather than a significant worry. "It will be a little bit of a challenge," he said, "but having watched trackwork on the grass this morning I have no concerns."

Road Ahead

Beyond Sunday, the trajectory for Masquerade Ball points toward an ambitious international programme. Tezuka confirmed the owner is keen on a European campaign this summer, with an autumn schedule that includes the LONGINES Hong Kong International Races as a stated option — a prospect that, should the horse perform at Sha Tin, will only gather momentum.
