Romantic Warrior claims unprecedented fourth G1 FWD QEII Cup

Romantic Warrior has rewritten the record books once more, claiming an unprecedented fourth G1 FWD QEII Cup at Sha Tin on Sunday to cement his status as one of the most dominant middle-distance performers in modern racing history. The eight-year-old's latest triumph pushed his Group 1 tally to 14, lifted his world record earnings to HK$271.46 million, and extended his extraordinary Sha Tin 2000m record to 14 wins from 15 starts.

The Race

Drawn against international Group 1 winners, Romantic Warrior settled fourth as Numbers and Giovanni set a modest early tempo. The race opened up from the 800m mark, and when jockey James McDonald asked for effort at the 300m, the response was emphatic. Romantic Warrior accelerated clear to defeat Japan's Masquerade Ball by a length, with Sosie a further half-length back in third. The final time of 2m 00.64s included a closing 400m in 21.91s.

The HK$30 million victory was the gelding's fourth in this race, adding to a Sha Tin resume that already includes four G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Cups and a BMW Hong Kong Derby. For trainer Danny Shum and owner Peter Lau, it marked win number 23 from 30 career starts for a horse purchased for HK$4.8 million at the 2021 Hong Kong International Sale.

McDonald's Assessment

McDonald, who has partnered Romantic Warrior in 16 victories including Group 1 wins in Australia, Japan and Dubai, was effusive in his praise. The jockey singled out the threat posed by Masquerade Ball, whose third in the Japan Cup had earned significant respect, before describing his mount's condition as the best he has seen.

"It's probably the best he has ever looked," McDonald said. "He just looked so unbelievably well, and he is so relaxed. In Dubai and Saudi, he was really worked up, and even in his work, he was worked up."

The contrast in demeanour appears to have been decisive. McDonald characterised Romantic Warrior as "bullet proof" and highlighted the tactical ease with which the gelding operates over 2000m, resting when required before producing what he termed "an incredible turn of foot."

Triple Crown Target

Shum confirmed the HK$13 million G1 Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup over 2400m on 24 May as the next objective. Victory would complete the Triple Crown — following earlier wins in the G1 Stewards' Cup (1600m) and G1 Citi Hong Kong Gold Cup (2000m) — and trigger a HK$10 million bonus.

The trainer referenced Voyage Bubble's previous completion of the feat while acknowledging final clearance would come from owner Peter Lau. Shum's confidence stems from what he describes as Romantic Warrior's best seasonal form, with the gelding thriving over his optimal 2000m distance.

"I don't tell him he's eight years old, I always keep telling him he's five only," Shum joked, before turning serious. "He races very easily and he's very good. He's a super, super champion."

The Champions & Chater Cup will test whether Romantic Warrior's brilliance extends another two furlongs and whether an eight-year-old can maintain the form that has made him one of racing's most reliable performers across three continents.
