Newnham strikes first Sha Tin Group 1 as My Wish takes Champions Mile

Mark Newnham's breakthrough season reached new heights at Sha Tin on Sunday afternoon as My Wish delivered the trainer his first Group 1 victory at Hong Kong's premier track, taking the HK$24 million FWD Champions Mile in commanding fashion. The third-season conditioner, who claimed March's BMW Hong Kong Derby with Invincible Ibis, now holds two of the jurisdiction's most prestigious trophies in the space of five weeks.

The Result

My Wish, piloted by Hugh Bowman, stormed clear in the final 200 metres to defeat Cap Ferrat by a neck, with Docklands filling third and stablemate Invincible Ibis running fourth. The winning time of 1 minute 32.37 seconds lowered My Wish's own Sha Tin 1600-metre turf Group race record. At 1,011 pounds, the gelding was the smallest horse in the field.

How It Unfolded

Breaking from barrier 10, My Wish settled at the tail of the field as Copartner Prance established an early lead ahead of Red Lion, with Lucky Sweynesse and Jantar Mantar tracking. The pace was genuine throughout. Turning for home, six-time Group 1 winner Voyage Bubble made his challenge, but lacked the necessary speed in the closing stages. Bowman angled My Wish into clear running, and once balanced, the response was immediate. He hit the front with 200 metres remaining and held off Cap Ferrat's sustained finish.

Bowman, who won this race twelve months earlier aboard Red Lion, was measured in his assessment of the victory. The Australian acknowledged Newnham's rising status in the training ranks, noting that while he's not among the stable's most frequently used jockeys, he's fortunate to partner the better horses when called upon.

"The results speak for themselves," Bowman said. "Not only with the elite animals, but all of the horses in his stable. It's a pleasure to work with him and for him."

The jockey was confident entering the race and credited the strong pace for setting up My Wish's finishing kick. He described getting a smooth passage through the field and receiving an immediate response when asking for maximum effort.

Trainer's Perspective

Newnham pointed to a crucial piece of trackwork the previous Saturday morning as confirmation that My Wish was ready to fire. The gelding's workout was exceptional, and though Bowman is typically economical with words after track gallops, the trainer could detect the significance in his tone.

"We knew then that if things worked out during the race that his turn of foot would be superior at the end, and it has been," Newnham said.

The trainer praised both his runners, suggesting Invincible Ibis will develop into a legitimate force at this level when he returns next season. Of My Wish, who required a season and more to break through at Group 1 level, Newnham believes further success lies ahead based on current trajectory.

The result represents a reversal of the 2025 BMW Hong Kong Derby, when Cap Ferrat edged My Wish by a short head in the third leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series. That narrow defeat has now been answered emphatically.

Championship Context

Newnham's 49 victories this season place him second in the trainers' championship, one win behind leader Caspar Fownes on 50. Danny Shum also has 49 wins, while David Hayes sits fourth with 46. The margin at the top remains tight with the season entering its final phase.

Newnham credited his support team, specifically assistant trainers Henry at Sha Tin and Ivan at Conghua, along with work riders, head lads and stable staff. He noted the collective investment in the operation creates an environment where success is shared, anticipating the stable would be buzzing when he arrives Monday morning. The evidence suggests that energy is translating directly into results on the track.
