Romantic Warrior Enters Rare Company With Triple Crown Triumph

Romantic Warrior added another defining chapter to one of Hong Kong racing’s greatest careers when he secured the HK$13 million G1 Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2400m) at Sha Tin on Sunday, becoming only the third horse to complete the Hong Kong Triple Crown.

The Danny Shum-trained eight-year-old joined River Verdon and Voyage Bubble as the only Triple Crown winners in Hong Kong history, while extending his own Group 1 tally to a Hong Kong record 15 victories. The win also lifted his career earnings to a world-record HK$288.7 million after collecting the HK$10 million Triple Crown bonus for owner Peter Lau.

Under James McDonald, Romantic Warrior settled comfortably in fourth behind the pace set by Numbers and Romantic Thor before improving smoothly into the race approaching the home turn. McDonald gradually built momentum in the straight and the champion surged past Numbers inside the final 50m to score by half a length, with Japan’s Deep Monster another length-and-a-half away in third.

The winning time of 2m 26.67s matched the mark set by Voyage Bubble in last season’s renewal, while Romantic Warrior closed strongly over the final stages to further underline his versatility at the elite level from 1600m through to 2400m.

Shum revealed the stable had mapped out a patient ride beforehand, allowing the gelding to relax early before producing him late.

“Before the race we already set up the plan – put him to sleep, let him relax, and try to hit the front,” Shum said after the race.

The trainer was quick to credit both the horse and his wider team following another landmark success.

“I’m such a lucky guy, lucky trainer – because I can train Romantic Warrior,” Shum said. “We’re happy because we have a very good team and stable. Peter always makes the right decisions and James McDonald is a very good jockey.”

Importantly, Shum indicated Romantic Warrior would now head for a break before any decision is made on his future racing programme. He also confirmed the possibility of sending the gelding to Conghua for the first time.

“The plan is to give him a break. I will think about whether to send him to Conghua, same as Ka Ying Rising. Ka Ying Rising is very happy there,” Shum said. “So, I might send him to Conghua, give him a little break, and then see how he goes.”

McDonald described the victory as a fitting addition to a career already worthy of historic recognition.

“He’s a Triple Crown winner, he thoroughly deserved it,” McDonald said. “He didn’t need to win this to be that. I think this is the cherry on top.”

The significance of the achievement was amplified by the manner in which Romantic Warrior again delivered under pressure, adding another major staying performance to a résumé already built on sustained excellence at the highest level.

Purton Closes On 2,000 Hong Kong Wins

Zac Purton moved within two victories of the 2,000-win milestone in Hong Kong after riding a treble on the Sha Tin program.

The champion jockey struck aboard David Hall-trained Flying Amani in the Class 5 Standard Chartered Digital Assets Handicap (1600m), Jimmy Ting’s Come Fast Fay Fay in the Class 4 Standard Chartered Sustainable Finance Handicap (1400m), and Packing King for Danny Shum in the Standard Chartered Corporate & Investment Banking Handicap (1200m).

Purton admitted the afternoon exceeded expectations after reaching 1,998 Hong Kong victories.

“It was alright. I was hoping to ride one or two today, so three was better than expected,” Purton said.

Trainers’ Championship Tightens

Shum’s double took him to 56 wins for the season, placing him ahead of Caspar Fownes on 54 in the trainers’ championship race.

Fownes remained firmly in contention after Monarch County produced a dominant display under Joao Moreira to win the Class 4 Standard Chartered Priority Banking Handicap (1400m).

Mark Newnham sits on 52 wins, while Francis Lui, David Hayes and John Size remain in striking distance as the season heads toward its closing stages.

Hayes also scored on the card when three-year-old My Mars took the Class 3 Standard Chartered Renminbi Business Handicap (1200m) under Brenton Avdulla.

Elsewhere, Dylan Mo partnered Ricky Yiu-trained Mighty Strength to victory in the Class 3 Standard Chartered Wealth Solutions Handicap (1800m), while Craig Williams and Cody Mo combined with Conrad Patch in the Class 4 Standard Chartered Greater Bay Area Handicap (1200m).

Jamie Richards-trained Big Return extended his winning sequence to three with victory under Alexis Badel in the Class 4 Standard Chartered Priority Private Handicap (1600m), before Badel completed a double aboard Douglas Whyte-trained Six Pack in the Class 2 Standard Chartered Global Private Bank Handicap (1400m).

The Red Hare closed the meeting impressively for Frankie Lor and Matthew Poon in the Class 3 Standard Chartered SME Banking Handicap (1400m).

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday night, but the lasting image from Sha Tin belongs to Romantic Warrior — a horse who has already defined an era and now occupies a place reserved for the rarest champions.
