Regaleira breaks 64 year Arima Record Kinen

The world's biggest betting race produced an unforgettable display of determination and class as Regaleira, a three-year-old filly by Suave Richard, etched her name in the history books with a dramatic victory in the 69th Arima Kinen (G1). Overcoming a slow start to her season and fierce competition from nine Group 1 winners, Regaleira became only the second three-year-old filly to capture this coveted title since Star Roch’s triumph in 1960.

This breathtaking victory marks a significant milestone for trainer Tetsuya Kimura, who previously won the Arima Kinen with Equinox in 2022. For jockey Keita Tosaki, it was a return to Arima Kinen glory, his second win in the race following Gentildonna’s success a decade ago.

A Hard-Fought Journey to Victory

Regaleira’s path to the Grand Prix title was anything but smooth. After claiming the Hopeful Stakes (G1) as a two-year-old, she faced stiff competition this year, finishing outside the top three in the Satsuki Sho, Tokyo Yushun, and Queen Elizabeth II Cup. Despite these setbacks, trainer Kimura remained confident in her ability, and the filly delivered on her potential in spectacular fashion.

Breaking from a favorable draw, Regaleira settled mid-pack early in the race, maintaining a comfortable rhythm. Her main rival, Shahryar, bided his time further back before making a bold move on the outside approaching the final turn. Regaleira responded with equal vigor, shifting out for clear running as the leaders tired.

What followed was a thrilling head-to-head duel between Regaleira and the six-year-old Shahryar. The pair pulled away from the field in the final 100 meters, trading strides in an electrifying finish that required a photo to determine the winner. By the slimmest of margins, Regaleira emerged victorious, showcasing her grit and determination in the race of her career.

Reflections from the Winning Jockey

Jockey Keita Tosaki, who partnered with Regaleira for the first time, expressed his delight and relief post-race.
“I knew a good start was critical, and though we may have been a fraction late, we managed to settle into a good position,” Tosaki shared. “Her response in the straight was tremendous, but the competition was so fierce, I wasn’t sure if we had won. I’m incredibly grateful to the connections for entrusting me with this ride.”

Key Contenders and Results

Second place went to Shahryar, who nearly capped his illustrious career with victory.

Danon Decile, the Tokyo Yushun champion and second favorite, set a slow pace early but was caught in the final 50 meters, securing third place.

Urban Chic, the race favorite, had an uncharacteristically rough start and faded to sixth, unable to sustain his momentum in the stretch.

Notable Performances

While Regaleira and Shahryar stole the spotlight, other notable efforts included:

Bellagio Opera (4th): Stalked the leader throughout but was overtaken late.

Justin Palace (5th): Made up ground after an early bump but fell short of the leaders.

Rousham Park (7th): Produced a strong late kick, passing several rivals in the stretch.

Meanwhile, some runners, including Blow the Horn and Deep Bond, struggled to make an impact, finishing well outside contention.

A Historic Achievement

Regaleira’s triumph in the Arima Kinen cements her place among Japanese racing’s elite and offers a glimpse of her potential as she enters her four-year-old campaign. Her victory is also a testament to the strength of Japanese fillies and their growing prominence on the international stage.

The 2024 Arima Kinen will be remembered not just for its nail-biting finish but for the extraordinary rise of a filly who overcame the odds to claim the crown in one of Japan’s most beloved races.
