Star rolls back the years

Tropical Star rolled back the years to win the Group 3 Najah Al Shindagha Sprint, the highlight of the Commercial Bank of Dubai-sponsored second meeting of the 2007 Dubai International Racing Carnival.

The Ali Rashid Al Raihe-trained seven-year-old, under Royston Ffrench, scooped the US$200,000 prize over 1200 metres - but only just.

The veteran sprinter looked to be struggling for most of the journey, but Ffrench never gave up as the pair got up to short-head Thajja.

"He was very disappointing in the Maktoum Challenge Round 1 a week ago, but this is more his trip," said Ffrench.

Great Rhythm may take up the invite to run in the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield in Australia on March 3 after he took the Asian Racing Federation Stakes.

In a new initiative this season, the winner receives an invitation - together with travel subsidies - to run in the first leg of the 2007 Asian Mile Challenge.

Trainer Herman Brown said: "It`s a possibility. We will see how he comes out of the race and have a look at the programme in Dubai, before making a decision."

The South African raider left it late in claiming the $175,000 prize, just denying King Jock, who has already been invited to run in the Group 1 contest Down Under.

His trainer Robbie Osborne said: "Australia`s always been in our thoughts and we`ll have to have a long hard think about it. I actually thought he was going to win, but he`s still run a cracking race."

Germany posted their first win in the 2007 Dubai International Racing Carnival with Quijano under an armchair ride from Mick Kinane in the $120,000 Aman Trophy.

Trainer Peter Schiergen hopes his five-year-old will make the necessary progress to run in the $5million Dubai Sheema Classic the joint-second richest race in the world.

Ed Dunlop celebrated his first win in the UAE thanks to Munaddam`s victory in the $120,000 Attijari Phone Cup.

It was also a memorable night for Richard Hills, as the win was the middle leg of a scintillating hat-trick, following his win on Al Jalfane in the opening Tasaheel Cup for Purebred Arabians and the closing Tam-Wheel Plate, thanks to Tabadul`s late charge.

Kinane was on the mark earlier with Fairmile in the $110,000 Zawaj Stakes, who was continuing a good run for trainer Ismail Mohammed.

Brazil followed up their win seven days ago, after Greetings, under Richard Mullen, made light work of collecting the $30,000 Shahrazade Trophy.
