Epsom Oaks: Moore holds the key

Ryan Moore holds the key to the 2026 Epsom Oaks market, and his mount choice may well render the race outcome a formality before the field has even reached Tattenham Corner. With Aidan O'Brien saddling multiple contenders and a cluster of progressive fillies lurking at realistic each-way prices, this year's renewal carries unusual depth behind an unusually dominant stable presence.

The Market Principals

Amelia Earhart (Ryan Moore) heads the market at 15/8. It took her five attempts to break her maiden at two, but her Chester performance reframed the narrative entirely. Fitted with the unconventional combination of a hood and blinkers, she jumped clear of her rivals in the Cheshire Oaks to plant herself firmly at the head of the ante-post market. O'Brien was candid about the unusual headgear arrangement at a media morning, acknowledging the apparent contradiction between the two pieces of equipment — one designed to settle, the other to sharpen — but concluding simply that results override theory. The yard has won six of the last ten runnings of this race, and she is unambiguously their first string.

Legacy Link (Colin Keane) is the 11/4 second favourite and the one from outside the O'Brien operation who merits serious consideration. The first foal of a sister to Frankel and Noble Mission, she rounded off her juvenile season with fourth behind Precise in the Fillies' Mile before stepping up markedly in the Musidora Stakes. Connections acknowledged she needed the run at York, yet she still won — showing both the attitude and the finishing effort that point to a filly not yet operating near her ceiling. The stiffer Epsom test should suit, and physical and mental improvement is expected as a matter of course.

The Challengers

Thundering On (Dylan Brown McMonagle) at 6/1 represents the Joseph O'Brien yard and offers live each-way claims. Her form ties in with several of these, and the Salsabil Stakes — a race won in 2025 by stablemate Wemightakedlongway, who then finished fourth at Epsom — provides a mildly encouraging precedent. Ezeliya, Dermot Weld's 2024 Salsabil winner, doubled up at Epsom the same year.

Cameo (Wayne Lordan) at 8/1 deserves inclusion in the each-way conversation after winning the Lingfield Oaks Trial with clear authority. The form sits below Amelia Earhart's level, but she demonstrated the ability to handle a downhill track and see out the distance, and further progress is a reasonable expectation. The last filly to complete the Lingfield–Epsom double was Anapurna in 2019, trained by John Gosden.

A La Prochaine (James Doyle) is available at 10/1. A half-sister to German Derby second Mr Hollywood, she showed her affinity for soft ground when winning her sole juvenile start at Newbury. She finished over three lengths behind Amelia Earhart in the Cheshire Oaks, though Ralph Beckett was not entirely satisfied with her appearance on the day and has since indicated she improved notably for the run. The yard has a track record in this race, and further improvement is plausible.

Venetian Lace (William Buick) at 12/1 makes the cut on merit. Charlie Johnston was explicit that the 1000 Guineas served as an Oaks trial for her, and she returned a third-place finish that confirms she belongs in this grade. She was one place better than that on her final juvenile start in the Fillies' Mile. Questions around stamina exist, though her pedigree — by a Derby winner and out of a sister to a 12-furlong winner — offers reasonable encouragement on paper.

The Remainder

K Sarra (Rossa Ryan) at 14/1 caught the eye staying on in the Musidora but requires ease in the ground and reportedly did not work to her trainer's satisfaction during the week at Epsom. Connections had indicated the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot as a possible alternative target, making her participation here notable given she has taken her place. On Message at 25/1 is an Epsom handicap winner off a mark of 80 who ran a close third in the Height Of Fashion off 85 (revised to 99), and faces a significant step up in class. Sugar Island at 33/1 made the running in the Cheshire Oaks as the stable's second string to Amelia Earhart — her dam is a sister to Oaks winner Minding, so the breeding credentials are genuine, and she cannot be entirely dismissed if front-running tactics again produce a muddling tempo.

The market has drawn its conclusions clearly, with Amelia Earhart's Chester form commanding favouritism and Legacy Link the most credible threat from outside the O'Brien stronghold. Whether the race develops into a straight match between those two, or whether the each-way prices further down the field prove generous, may depend largely on how the pace unfolds on the descent to Tattenham Corner.
