Dark Saffron Defies Doubters to Seal Golden Shaheen Repeat in Style

There was a time this season when Dark Saffron looked a shadow of the horse that had lit up Meydan a year earlier. Beaten out of sight in multiple starts and seemingly short on confidence, the defending champion arrived at Saturday’s $2 million Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen with more questions than answers.

By the time the field hit the wire, those doubts had been emphatically dismissed.

Ridden with intent from a wide gate by Connor Beasley, Dark Saffron was sent straight into the contest, matching strides early before asserting control when it mattered most. Showing the kind of early speed that defined his previous success in the race, he seized the initiative turning for home and never relinquished it, holding off a determined challenge from Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Bentornato.

The victory completed a memorable Group 1 double on the night for Beasley and trainer Ahmad bin Harmash, who had earlier teamed up to land the Al Quoz Sprint with Native Approach.

For Dark Saffron, the turnaround has been as striking as it has been timely. After a winning seasonal debut in November, his campaign quickly unraveled, culminating in a series of heavy defeats that suggested something was amiss. A troubled run involving a stall incident appeared to dent his confidence further, leaving connections searching for answers.

There were signs of a revival on Super Saturday when he finished second to El Nasseeb in the Mahab Al Shimaal, but few could have predicted the full return to form that followed under the Meydan lights.

Breaking sharply from barrier 11, Dark Saffron pressed forward to sit prominently alongside early pace influences Tuz and Khanjar, while Bentornato was forced to adopt an unfamiliar stalking role just off the speed. That tactical shift may have ultimately shaped the outcome.

Once in front inside the final 500 meters, Dark Saffron found another gear under pressure, stretching clear enough to keep the American challenger at bay through the closing stages.

Cats By Five ran on late to claim third, while former winner Tuz faded after setting the early tempo.

The win places Dark Saffron alongside notable back-to-back Golden Shaheen winners such as Caller One and Mind Your Biscuits, and also secures him a “Win and You’re In” berth for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Keeneland later this year.

“Obviously he won this race last year and he come back and run really well, it was a bit of a workout first time he ran this season,” Beasley said. “Then he had a bit of an incident in the stalls and banged his head and sort of lost his way. I think he lost a bit of confidence for his next three or four runs, but his last run we felt he was coming back to himself.”

Bentornato’s trainer Jose D’Angelo was left to rue the draw and race dynamics.

“I think the post position cost us the race,” he said. “It's the first time that we've seen him running in behind the speed. We have plenty of races and of course, the ultimate goal is the Breeders' Cup again. We'll give him time as always and be ready for that.”
