Tony Ives, Last Apprentice to Place in Derby, Dies at 71

Tony Ives, one of the most recognisable jockeys of his generation and the last apprentice rider to place in the Derby, has died in Thailand at the age of 71 with his family beside him. His death closes the chapter on a career that stretched across 25 years, delivered more than 2,000 winners and included success at the highest level in Europe and the United States.

Ives built his reputation in British racing during an era when lightweight riders were expected to combine tactical discipline with relentless durability. Raised in North Yorkshire, he first came to prominence alongside trainer Reg Hollinshead, a partnership that nearly produced Classic glory in the 1978 2,000 Guineas when Remainder Man finished second. The colt would later run third in the Derby at Epsom, a result that ensured Ives retained his unique distinction as the last apprentice jockey to place in the race.

His standing in the weighing room strengthened further after becoming stable jockey to Bill O’Gorman, whose operation became synonymous with fast and precocious juveniles. O’Gorman’s two-year-olds were among the defining forces of the period, and Ives became closely associated with their success.

The defining Classic triumph of his career arrived in 1987 aboard Forest Flower in the Irish 1,000 Guineas. That victory established him as a rider capable of delivering on major occasions, not simply in Britain but on the broader international stage.

His biggest payday and arguably most internationally significant success came two years earlier in the Arlington Million in Chicago. The race had already established itself as one of the world’s premier turf contests, attracting elite horses and trainers from both Europe and America.

Riding the Bill Watts-trained Teleprompter, Ives produced what was widely regarded as a measured and tactically sharp ride to land the major prize. The significance of that victory remains clear given the stature the Arlington Million would continue to hold, later won by trainers including Aidan O’Brien, John Gosden and, more recently, Charlie Appleby with Nation’s Pride.

Persistent back problems eventually curtailed Ives’ riding career, forcing his retirement in 1996 after his final winner at Lingfield. By then, he had compiled a record that placed him among the most accomplished British riders of his era, with achievements spanning Classics, major international races and more than two thousand victories overall.

His career remains tied to a period when British jockeys increasingly travelled and competed on the global stage, and Ives was one of the riders who proved they could succeed far beyond domestic racing.
