Sandown Stud continues to produce quality performers across South Africa, with the farm’s current standard-bearers including the talented Rodeo Drive, who was born and raised on the farm and Royal Invitation. Interestingly, I Salute You, the Durban July runner, with inbound international jockey Mark Du Plessis on, was also born and raised at Sandown. The latest update is that Jazz Cafe won the G3 Winter Fillies Stakes, she is a Sandown bred.
The classy four-year-old Rodeo Drive has banked more than R1.1 million in prize-money, highlighted by her victory in this season’s G2 Mike De Kock Ipi Tombe Challenge. Meanwhile, the tough and consistent Royal Invitation enjoyed an outstanding campaign, capturing the Listed TAB Spook Express Stakes, World Sports Betting Highland Night Cup and Sun Chariot Handicap.
Sandown will present a strong draft at this year’s KZN Yearling Sale, featuring progeny by Digital Age, Erik The Red, Hawwaam, and resident stallions Pathfork and Soqrat.
One of the standout features of the consignment is the depth and quality of its broodmare band.
Shaama, the Redoute’s Choice mare who finished runner-up in the G1 SA Nursery, has already produced three winners, headed by G3 Victress Stakes heroine Saartjie. She is represented by a Hawwaam filly (Lot 104), with Hawwaam’s first crop having made a significant impact during the current juvenile season.
Another daughter of Redoute’s Choice, Musaanada, has produced three winners, including Sea Cottage Stakes winner and Highveld Winter Series star Choisaanada - he is a Durban July entry. Her representative in the draft is a colt by resident sire Soqrat (Lot 65).
Among the other appealing offerings are Journey’s End (Lot 12), a Pathfork filly out of a three-time winning, stakes-placed mare; A Complete Unknown (Lot 138), an Erik The Red filly from the distinguished family of champions Ice Cube and Whistling Dixie; and Combat Action (Lot 150), a Danon Platina half-brother to three winners, including the talented Soldier’s Eye.
The Sandown Stud draft can be viewed in Blocks C and D at the Suncoast Casino in Durban.
