One Stripe’s much-anticipated South African swansong in the non-black-type Big Cap (R5) ended in unexpected fashion, as he failed to make an impact in his final run before heading to the United States.
In a twist few saw coming, it was Vaughan Marshall’s other runner, All Out Got Six, who stole the show. Under Grant van Niekerk, he outgunned LA Pulga and Great Plains to claim the R3 million winner’s purse.
For One Stripe, the race took a sharp turn for the worse at a crucial moment. Jockey Gavin Lerena had him positioned to strike, but just as he was set to make his move, the inside gap slammed shut. Unable to recover, he faded to a disappointing sixth, finishing six lengths behind the winner.
It was another blow to the Cape feature form, which has struggled to hold up this season, with horses from various divisions running on top of each other—except, of course, for One Stripe, who had previously delivered when it mattered.
Hollywood Bets’ recent high-profile purchase never quite looked like he had much in hand before the interference, though Lerena had a different view. Regardless, All Out Got Six looked a winner with or without the One Stripe factor.
The incident in question came from The Grey King, owned by Greg Bortz, whose jockey Craig Zackey moved into One Stripe’s path, possibly assuming Lerena wasn’t committing to the gap fast enough.
While One Stripe’s South African career ends on a subdued note, his future now lies abroad.
Today, however, belonged to All Out Got Six and Grant van Niekerk.
