British jockey Connor Beasley enjoyed a career-defining moment as Golden Vekoma (USA) stormed to victory in the US$1.5 million Saudi Derby, presented by ZOOD Realty. Representing the United Arab Emirates, the Ahmad Bin Harmash-trained colt showed his class in a thrilling finish to the 1600m Group 3 event.
Fresh from his triumph in the UAE 2000 Guineas, Golden Vekoma was confidently ridden by Beasley, tracking the early leaders as the Japanese contenders surged to the front. Shin Forever (USA), ridden by Akira Sugawara, made a bold move for home in the straight, momentarily looking like the winner. However, Beasley’s mount found another gear, reeling him in with a powerful late run to win by one and three-quarter lengths, stopping the clock in 1:38.185.
What They Said
Connor Beasley, Jockey – Golden Vekoma (1st)
“These were deep waters today, but he proved his quality. It’s a massive moment for me and the whole team.
“We went at a good pace down the back, and I just had to keep in touch. As soon as we hit the straight, he got down to business and galloped right to the line.
“He’s been a horse we’ve had huge faith in from the start of the season, and he’s progressed every step of the way. Winning a race of this magnitude, against top international competition, is what dreams are made of.
“I always believed he would get there once we were within half a length of the leader. He’s done something special this season, and this is just the beginning – he’ll only go on to bigger things. Ticking this box is an incredible feeling.
“To win on a stage like this, against world-class rivals, is exactly where I want to be riding winners. I was lucky to get the opportunity, and I’m grateful we got the job done.”
Ahmad Bin Harmash, Trainer – Golden Vekoma
“I’m incredibly proud. He’s a horse with a big heart who always gives his best. We knew he liked the mile, so we took a chance here before looking ahead to the UAE Derby.
“The only time we had any doubts was on his debut in December when he finished third. He lacked experience back then, but he’s improved significantly since.
“Winning away from home is always tough, but it’s fantastic to showcase our horse on an international stage. This is a great result for UAE racing and for our team.”
Akira Sugawara, Jockey – Shin Forever (2nd)
“It was a very close race. He felt great and traveled smoothly, so I was hopeful he would hold on until the finish. He adapted well to the track all week, and he put in a fantastic performance. I was confident in his chances coming into the race.”
