Hong Kong’s champion Romantic Warrior is set to make history this Saturday as he takes on the dirt for the first time in the world’s richest race, the $20 million Saudi Cup. Trainer Danny Shum, who appeared increasingly confident on Thursday morning, is eager to see how his star adapts to the new challenge.
Owned by Peter Law, the multiple Group 1-winning gelding has been preparing with two days of sharp workouts under regular rider James McDonald. Despite limited exposure to dirt surfaces, the team remains optimistic about his chances.
"I'm pleased with how he’s handled the surface so far, and James feels the same,” Shum said. “The big question is how he reacts to the kickback—some horses handle it well, while others shorten their stride. We won’t truly know until race day, but physically, he looks in peak condition.”
Romantic Warrior has drawn barrier three in a 14-horse field, and Shum believes the race dynamics will be crucial. “This track offers great flexibility, but the first 200 meters are run at an intense pace, very much in the American style,” he noted, having studied past editions of the Saudi Cup.
With his proven class and top-notch preparation, Romantic Warrior is poised to make a bold bid for victory in uncharted territory.
