Australian jockey Zac Purton etched his name deeper into Hong Kong racing history on Sunday, December 29, by becoming only the second rider to achieve 1,800 career wins in the region. A treble at Sha Tin highlighted the day, bringing Purton within striking distance—just 13 wins—of Douglas Whyte’s all-time record of 1,813 victories.
Purton’s triumphant run included wins aboard John Size-trained Endeared in the Lung Fu Shan Handicap (1400m) and Masterofmyuniverse in the Ho Chung Handicap (1200m). He capped off the day by piloting Benno Yung’s Tourbillon Prince to victory in the Eagle’s Nest Handicap (1400m).
Reflecting on his milestone, the seven-time Hong Kong champion jockey said, “Obviously, there’s a lot of pride in reaching 1,800. It just comes down to the opportunities and support I get—I can’t do anything without that. I never thought I’d get to this number, but now I’m chasing another one (Whyte’s record). It’s very satisfying.”
Purton’s form has been nothing short of sensational, with nine wins from his last 18 rides, propelling him to 60 wins for the season—well ahead of Hugh Bowman (26) and Vincent Ho (21).
Bravehearts Shines in Class 2 Buffalo Bill Handicap
Former Argentine stayer Bravehearts continued his stellar season with a victory in the Buffalo Bill Handicap (2000m) under Matthew Poon. This marks the gelding’s third win from four starts this campaign, further solidifying his credentials for Hong Kong’s premier staying contests.
Trainer Mark Newnham plans to target the HK$4.2 million G3 Queen Mother Memorial Cup (2400m) in May and is eyeing the HK$13 million G1 Champions & Chater Cup (2400m) later in the season. “He’s in really good form and keeps improving,” Newnham said. “I think he’ll be even better over longer distances.”
Rising Stars and Season Highlights
Matthew Poon, who rode Bravehearts to victory, expressed his excitement about the gelding’s potential. “He’s improved every start, and I can’t wait to see him over 2400m,” Poon said.
Elsewhere, apprentice Britney Wong secured her sixth career win aboard Jolly Companion, while Luke Ferraris notched his 18th win of the season with The Absolute. Alexis Badel and Antoine Hamelin also added to their tallies with wins in Class 5 contests.
As the Hong Kong racing calendar enters the new year, Zac Purton stands poised to break Douglas Whyte’s long-standing record. With his current momentum, 2024 could very well see a new all-time champion emerge.
