South African Champion Princess Calla to Be Bred to McKinzie

South African Horse of the Year Princess Calla is set to begin her broodmare career in the United States, with plans for her to be bred to McKinzie in her maiden season. The multiple Group 1-winning mare, who also earned the title of Champion Older Mare in 2023, will now embark on a new chapter following a stellar racing career.

Bred in South Africa, Princess Calla (Flower Alley – Princess Royal, by Captain Al) showcased her class on the track, consistently competing at the highest level. Her arrival at her new home has been met with great enthusiasm.

“I think she'll be a fantastic broodmare,” said Stewart on his podcast where he conducted an online mating show, who welcomed her to the farm. “How many Flower Alley horses do you see around here? We're really excited about having her here. We've bought horses from five continents this year, and she came to us out of South Africa.”

The decision to pair Princess Calla with McKinzie, a multiple Grade 1 winner and son of Street Sense, is a carefully considered one. General Manager for Resolute Racing Gavin O’Connor, another key figure in the decision, believes the match is ideal.

“Princess Calla's race record stands for itself,” O'Connor said. “When you first set eyes on her, she looks like a high-quality individual. She’s a multiple Group 1 winner, and physically, she and McKinzie really complement each other.”

With her impeccable pedigree and racing credentials, Princess Calla has the potential to make a significant impact in the breeding shed. The combination with McKinzie brings together top-tier bloodlines from both South Africa and North America, setting the stage for an exciting future.
