Princess Calla, South Africa’s 2023 Horse of the Year, has been withdrawn from the Breeders' Cup due to severe bleeding issues.
Resolute Racing confirmed the unfortunate news, with John Stewart exclusively telling SAHorseracing.COM, “She’s not running. The bleeding is too serious, and we are currently assessing her condition.”
When asked about her future and the possibility of retirement, Stewart added, “Maybe, but she’s in excellent condition otherwise.”
With respect to her epistaxis, "Yes 2/5 with lasix in her last race. But it was really stressful for her because side she didn’t have her ear muffs in and there was a starter in the gate with her. So we have her in Kentucky evaluating her," said Stewart.
Resolute Racing remains busy in the coming weeks, as their other star horse, Goliath, is set to compete in the Japan Cup after a victory in France last Sunday.
