Maine Chance Farms’ outstanding sire Silvano (Lomitas) is enjoying yet another tremendous season and is currently leading South Africa’s General Sires List.
The evergreen sire’s offspring have already won 62 races this season and earned over R4.99 million in stakes.
Silvano’s top earners this season, thus far, include Gr3 Betting World Algoa Cup hero Nebula, and Gr3 Yellowwood Handicap star Girl On The Run.
His champion son Marinaresco will take on reigning Horse Of The Year Legal Eagle (Greys Inn) and Silvano sired Gr2 Canon Guineas winner Black Arthur in Saturday’s Gr2 World Sports Betting Green Point Stakes.
Himself an outstanding racehorse, Silvano made history when he became the first German bred horse to win a Gr1 race in America –he landed the 2001 Arlington Million over a field which included such Gr1 winners as Caitano (Niniski), Redattore (Roi Normand), White Heart (Green Desert), Bienamado (Bien Bien), and Quiet Resolve (Affirmed). Silvano, who won seven times from 1400-2200m, was Germany’s Horse Of The Year and Champion Older Male in 2001, and his other notable wins included the Gr1 Singapore Airlines International Cup and Hong Kong’s G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup.
Silvano’s top German sired runners include the G1 Deutsches Derby hero Lucky Speed, classic winning filly Mi Emma, champion Fair Mountain and multiple graded stakes winner Proudinsky.
The sire of 64 stakes winners to date, Silvano has 17 individual Gr1 winners to his credit, with his sons Bold Silvano, Heavy Metal and Power King having all landed South Africa’s most famous horse-race, the Gr1 Vodacom Durban July. (Power King leading home a Silvano trifecta when beating his paternal half brothers Punta Arenas and Tellina back in 2015).
Other notable South African sired Gr1 winners by Silvano include Equus Champions Aslan, Kings Gambit and Vercingetorix (the latter now stands at Maine Chance alongside his sire), with the latter having also enjoyed international success. Vercingetorix proved a wonderful advert for South Africa in 2014 when he won the Gr1 Jebel Hatta and ran second in the Gr1 Dubai Duty Free (to the world’s top rated runner of the year, Just A Way).
Silvano, Champion Sire in South Africa in 2012-2013, is also sire of the Gr1 winners Flirtation, Happy Valentine (who also won in France), Field Flower, Silver Mountain, and Seal –to name a few. The sire also made history when his son, Silver Coin, became the most expensive yearling sold at auction in South Africa, when he fetched R6 000 000 at this year’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale.
