The Gr 1 Premiers Champion Stakes, run over 1600m at Greyville on Saturday, produced a heart-stopping finish, with four runners crossing the line almost as one. When the dust settled, it was Harry's Son (AUS) who emerged the victor, just edging out maiden Jayyed. Anjaal and Mljet deadheated for third.
Fire Horse won the battle for the early lead from Rock Me Var with Captain Clipper and Anjaal next best. They were followed by Light The Lights and Afrika Burn while Harry's Son raced about seven lengths off the pace. Jayyed and Mljet were held back even further behind in the pack.
The pacemakers were soon under pressure in the straight as Anjaal made the first move. However, challenges were soon to come exploding through from all side and the closing stages saw four runners in contention, any of whom could have won it. Mljet had caught the eye by bursting through once he found a gap while Jayyed also produced a storming run from well off them. Harry's Son had steadily worked himself into the mix all the way down the straight and he responded well to Piere Strydom's urgings to stick his neck out when it mattered most and notch up the biggest win of his career.
Harry's Son was certainly not winning out of turn, as he came into the race with a string of graded race placings to his name. He had blown his chances in the Gr 1 Golden Horseshoe earlier this month, ducking in at a crucial stage in the straight and no-one will begrudge him this victory given the consistency he has shown.
Jayyed clearly won't be a maiden for much longer and, as with stablemate Anjaal, relished the step up in distance. Mljet, meanwhile, may be the one to take out of this race. The way he responded after initially having to look for a gap suggested that he is a horse with a future.
