The R500 000 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes, one of three Grade 1 races on the J&B Met card, has attracted a smashing field of fillies and mares. Top of the list is last year’s joint winner Love Is In The Air from the Mike Bass yard who will be taking on another Mike de Kock star in Gibraltar Blue and crack three-year-old Emerald Cove.
Love Is In The Air had to share honours with the De Kock-trained Gluwein last year and will be looking to improve on her recent third place in the TBA Paddock Stakes behind Emerald Cove.
Gibraltar Blue is due to line up in the Betting World Cape Flying Championship this coming Saturday at Kenilworth so will go into the Majorca superbly fit. The imported mare recently won the Ipi Tombe Challenge (Gr 2) over 1600m and prior to that the Gardenia Handicap over 1000m.
Emerald Cove won the TBA Paddock Stakes at long odds after being placed in two features behind stable star Ebony Flyer. She has however, drawn very wide this time round.
A Daughters Legacy from the Riaan van Reenen yard was runner up to Emerald Cove in the TBA Paddock Stakes while last season’s Woolavington 2000 winner and runner up in the Garden Province Stakes, Imperious Star, is back over what looks to be her best distance after fading late in the Paddock Stakes over 1800m.
