Journalism Retires After Remarkable Career

Journalism has been retired from racing after sustaining an injury in the starting stalls before last Saturday's Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar. The setback brought an immediate end to the career of one of North America's leading performers, but not before he produced one final display of determination to secure victory.

The son of Curlin overcame significant adversity in what proved to be his farewell appearance. After breaking five to six lengths behind the field, he recovered with a sweeping run around the outside before finishing strongly to capture the San Diego Handicap. The performance ultimately became the final chapter of a career defined by resilience and consistency.

Trained by Michael McCarthy, Journalism retires with seven victories from 14 starts and earnings exceeding $4.7 million. His record also reflects remarkable reliability, finishing in the first three on 13 occasions. His only unplaced effort came when fourth in the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Elite-Level Performer

Journalism assembled a résumé that placed him among the leading dirt performers of his generation. His Grade 1 victories came in the Preakness Stakes, Santa Anita Derby and Haskell Stakes, while he also captured the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity and concluded his racing career with victory in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap.

He also recorded runner-up finishes in both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, underlining his ability to compete at the highest level throughout the American Triple Crown series.

A particularly significant achievement came in 2025 when Journalism became the only horse to contest all three legs of that year's Triple Crown. He later returned to Saratoga for the 2026 Met Mile on Belmont Stakes Day, adding another elite assignment to an already distinguished campaign.

Next Chapter Begins

With his racing career complete, Journalism will commence stallion duties at Ashford Stud in Kentucky.

His retirement closes the book on a career that combined elite-level talent with exceptional consistency, leaving behind a record that stands among the strongest of his generation.
