Lopez Handed 30-Day Suspension Following Saratoga Spill

Paco Lopez has been suspended for 30 days after a four-horse fall in the Wild Applause Stakes on Saratoga's opening day on July 3, an incident that left one horse injured and sidelined jockey Javier Castellano for the remainder of most of July. Lopez's agent, Jose Garcia, has confirmed that an appeal against the suspension will be lodged.

According to the official Equibase race chart, Lopez's mount, I Love Giraffes, "bumped with the hindquarters of PILLAR OF BEAUTY then clipped heels with her left foreleg outside the quarter-pole and fell." The fall triggered a chain reaction involving three other runners.

While the incident appeared dramatic, two of the affected horses, Smexy and Lovely Grey, along with their riders Tyler Gaffalione and Dylan Davis, escaped without serious injury. Paris Carver also emerged unharmed.

The most significant human injury was sustained by Hall of Fame jockey Javier Castellano. In a statement released by the New York Racing Association on July 8, it was confirmed that Castellano suffered a minor lower back injury and is expected to miss most of July.

Lopez escaped injury in the accident. His mount, I Love Giraffes, was less fortunate and is recovering from a fractured hip.

Riding Commitments Continue

Despite the suspension, Lopez remains booked for rides on July 8 at Delaware Park and is also named to ride at Colonial Downs between July 9 and July 13.

The suspension also comes at a crucial stage of the summer season. Lopez is the regular rider of reigning champion male sprinter Book'em Danno, who is scheduled to contest the Mr. Prospector Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 17. He is also the regular partner of Preakness Stakes winner Napoleon Solo, the likely favourite for the Grade 1 Haskell Stakes on July 18.

Previous Disciplinary History

The latest suspension follows previous disciplinary action against Lopez. In September 2025, the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA) imposed a six-month suspension after determining that he had breached the conditions of his reinstatement.

That ruling stemmed from an incident at Parx Racing in December 2024 involving his use of the whip aboard National Law. The latest appeal will now determine whether the current 30-day penalty remains in place as another chapter is added to Lopez's disciplinary record.
