Title Role added a notable international Group success to the record of Simon and Ed Crisford when landing the Group 2 Coolmore City Of Troy German 2000 Guineas at Cologne, giving race sponsors Coolmore victory with a colt who continues to progress steadily through the European three-year-old ranks.

The colt arrived in Germany off a fifth-place finish in the Greenham Stakes at Newbury, having previously secured Listed success in Dubai earlier in the season. That form line gave him a solid platform in a race that featured several colts with established credentials across Britain and France.

Sean Levey settled Title Role in the first half of midfield along the rail before the race began to open up entering the straight. With the gaps appearing at the right time, Levey angled his mount into contention and quickly set about chasing down the Oisin Murphy-ridden leader Asker.

Once Title Role moved alongside, he picked up the front-runner readily. The margin, however, never became decisive. The colt edged slightly left under pressure and briefly allowed the chasing pack to close on him inside the final stages.

What proved significant was the way Title Role responded once challenged. Each time rivals moved to his quarters, he found again and maintained enough in reserve to keep them at bay through the line.

Karl Burke-trained Shayem, ridden by Clifford Lee, finished second after staying on late, with Loucas taking third. Francis Graffard’s Lord Clover had to settle for fourth despite bringing strong French form into the contest, having previously gone down narrowly to French Derby contender Hawk Mountain at Chantilly.

The performance suggested Title Role remains on an upward curve after only gradually building experience at Pattern level, and the Cologne victory now gives his connections further options as the European summer campaign develops.
