Motorious (GB), a six-year-old gelding by Muhaarar (GB) out of Squash (GB) (Pastoral Pursuits {GB}), added another milestone to his impressive career with a thrilling win in the GII Joe Hernandez Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday. This victory follows his commendable second-place finish in the prestigious GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.
Breaking slightly awkwardly, Motorious recovered quickly under the guidance of jockey Antonio Fresu and settled midpack as longshot Code Duello (Honor Code) tore through blazing opening fractions of :21.71 and :43.78. The rapid pace set the stage for a dramatic closing stretch.
As the field rounded the final turn, Motorious unleashed a powerful rally, locking into an electrifying battle with Sumter (War Front). The pair surged past the tiring Code Duello, with Motorious showing exceptional determination to edge out Sumter in the final strides. Irideo (Arg) (Easing Along) delivered a strong finish to claim third.
The victory highlighted the talent and teamwork of Motorious' connections. Owned by Anthony Fanticola, bred by Kirtlington Stud and Mrs. Mary Taylor (GB), and trained by Phil D’Amato, the gelding continues to affirm his place among the sport’s elite turf sprinters.
For jockey Antonio Fresu, the win marked another standout moment in his career, showcasing his composure and precision in the saddle.
Motorious' triumph in the Joe Hernandez Stakes underscores his consistency and class, further cementing his status as a formidable contender in the turf sprint division.
