Thorpedo Anna Takes Center Stage: 2024 U S Horse of the Year

A name that echoes through racing’s most hallowed grounds, Thorpedo Anna has cemented her legacy with a historic win as the 2024 Horse of the Year. In a glittering ceremony at The Breakers Palm Beach, the three-year-old filly was crowned at the 54th Annual Resolute Racing Eclipse Awards, dominating the night with a total of 193 first-place votes out of 240. Her campaign, a dazzling six-win season, left little doubt about her place in Thoroughbred racing history.

Trained by Kenny McPeek and owned by a consortium that includes Brookdale Racing, Inc., Mark Edwards, Judy Hicks, and Magdalena Racing, Thorpedo Anna’s journey has been a masterclass in dominance. Her resume? Glittering. The Kentucky-bred filly captured five Grade 1 victories, including the iconic Longines Kentucky Oaks and the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Del Mar. Though her lone defeat came in the DraftKings Travers Stakes (G1) against male competition, her tenacity shone through, missing victory by just a head to the 2023 Champion Two-Year-Old Male, Fierceness.

Thorpedo Anna’s brilliance is not just a matter of numbers—though her six-for-seven record speaks volumes. Her success places her in elite company; she’s now one of only two three-year-old fillies to win Horse of the Year honors, alongside the legendary Rachel Alexandra in 2009.

For the voters, her dominance left little room for debate. She was the unanimous pick for Champion Three-Year-Old Filly, and her ability to handle everything from the Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park to the Acorn Stakes at Belmont only underscored her versatility.
