Santa Anita Park's 90th season opening proved historic, boasting the largest opening day crowd in eight years and achieving a 17.4% increase in all-sources mutuel handle compared to 2023. Over $21.4 million was wagered globally, marking the third-highest opening day handle in the track's storied history and the fourth time in seven years the handle surpassed $20 million.
The on-track attendance of 41,562 set a record for a non-weekend or holiday opening day since 1990. Known for opening on December 26th since 1949, this year's event coincided with Southern California's ideal weather, making it a fitting start to the celebrations at "The Great Race Place."
Nate Newby, Santa Anita's SVP & General Manager, credited the Racing Office's strong program and widespread support from owners, trainers, and fans for the day's success. "The racing was top-notch, and the atmosphere was electric," he said.
Highlights included Flavien Prat setting a new benchmark for graded stakes wins in a single year with his victory aboard King of Gosford in the Mathis Mile. Frankie Dettori also made a splash, winning the Laffit Pincay Jr. Stakes aboard J B Strikes Back. Pincay, turning 78 this weekend, was present to award the trophy, underscoring the day’s mix of racing excellence and nostalgic celebration.
Founded in 1934 and holding its first opening day on Christmas, Santa Anita continues to serve as a pillar of American horse racing. The current meet runs through mid-June, promising more milestones as the historic track celebrates its 90th year.
