Vaughan Marshall, one of South Africa's most celebrated trainers, has earned his reputation as a master horseman and sharp judge of young talent over an illustrious 42-year career. Known for his exceptional skill in nurturing juveniles, Marshall has won most of the country’s prestigious races and played a key role in shaping South African racing history.
One of his greatest accomplishments was guiding Captain Al, a sire who forever changed the breeding landscape in South Africa. Under Marshall's expert care, Captain Al claimed ten victories in a stellar 17-race career, including the Grade 1 Cape Guineas. He later excelled at stud, becoming Champion Sire in the 2014-15 season and producing numerous Grade 1 winners.
Marshall's ability to develop juvenile stars is unmatched. His successes with Captain Al progeny include Always In Charge (2016 Gold Medallion), The Secret Is Out (2016 Alan Robertson), and All Is Secret (2012 Alan Robertson and Thekwini Stakes). Marshall also trained two of Captain Al’s sons—Hill Fifty Four (2014) and One World (2020)—to victories in the Cape Town Met, cementing his legacy as one of South Africa's finest trainers.
As Marshall approaches this Saturday’s 10-race card at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, he’s poised to make a major impact with runners primed for three of the four feature races on the day.
One Stripe: A Star in the Making
Marshall’s standout contender is One Stripe, a son of One World and one of his sire’s most exciting progeny. Already a dual Grade 3 winner as a juvenile, One Stripe is expected to shine in the Grade 2 Cape Punters Cup (Race 7) over 1600m.
Despite finishing second in his seasonal reappearance at Durbanville last month, One Stripe ran an admirable race, conceding weight to older rival Snow Pilot, who subsequently delivered a dominant performance at Kenilworth. With that run under his belt, One Stripe is poised to peak, especially over this distance.
Carrying the highest rating in the field and contesting under level weights, he is well-placed to secure a crucial victory in this traditional lead-up to December’s Cape Guineas. Jockey Gavin Lerena, who partners with the colt, could help deliver a win that would solidify One Stripe’s standing as a leading three-year-old.
Lion Rampart: Ready to Roar
In the 1200m Listed Sophomore Sprint (Race 4), Marshall saddles Lion Rampart, another son of One World. This colt showed potential with a close fourth in his seasonal debut earlier this month, despite missing his regular jockey, Richard Fourie. Now reunited with Fourie, Lion Rampart enjoys favorable weight swings with key rivals Roman Agent and Miss World, putting him in a strong position to reverse the form and return to the winner’s circle.
Questioning: The Answer to Race 5
Marshall’s Questioning, a Querari gelding, enters the 1100m Bantry Bay Stakes (Race 5) in career-best form. Having won both starts this season under JP van der Merwe, including the Grade 3 Matchem Stakes, Questioning is thriving. Although he received a small penalty for his last victory, the conditions of this race suit him, and he is weighted to win again.
Competitive Clashes in the Summer Bowl
While not a Marshall-trained race, the Non-Black Type Summer Bowl (Race 6) promises an intriguing contest among last season’s three-year-old stars—Rascova, Double Grand Slam, and Red Palace—who clash against older rivals.
Marshall’s Saturday Impact
With a proven track record and horses in top form, Vaughan Marshall looks set for another memorable day at Kenilworth. Whether it’s the promising One Stripe, the speedster Lion Rampart, or the consistent Questioning, Marshall’s runners are well-placed to dominate.
