Oisin Murphy has a decent book of rides on Betway Summer Cup day as he attempts to win a Group 1 race in Africa.
This first ride in South Africa or anywhere on the continent will be in race 2 where he rides for trainer Sean Tarry and prominent owner Kenneth Pillay and family on GREEN STREET.
The Fillies Mile, a Grade 3 event will likely be the source of his most likely winner bar the main event, where he takes charge of FIERY PEGASUS, the smart Joey Soma filly, who has already won three times and was most recently second to Celtic Rumours last time out in the Joburg F&M Challenge Gr2. This race is likely one of the highlights of the day and includes Vj's Angel and Olivia's Way.
His Dingaans ride is on Candice Dawson's Wild At War in a fairly open contest that contains numerous chances including the returning Quid Pro Quo, who opts for the Dingaans over the Fillies Mile due to the restrictive conditions in that Fillies Race for Grade 1 winners. The race also includes the progressive Fire Attack and could include both Heather's Boy and Greatrix, two quality colts as well, if they don't opt for the Cape Guineas.
“Oisin is really looking forward to riding at Turffontein,” said Ash Maharaj (pictured with Murphy in Riyadh earlier this year) who has engaged the British Champion for his South African stint. “He has a busy riding schedule and it’s an honour that he has added South Africa to his agenda. A big thanks goes out to Barry Irwin and Team Valor without which this landmark engagement would not have happened. Thanks also to Fundi Sithebe and 4Racing for seeing the broader vision in this project."
“Right now, he is regarded by many as the best jockey in the world and hopefully racing fans will come to Turffontein to see him in action.”
The main event, the Summer Cup itself, is the reason Oisin Murphy has been booked to ride in South Africa and he is on Team Valor's Frances Ethel. The ultra progress filly is weighted to win the contest coming into the race at 54kgs. The countries three top rated horses Main Defender, Winchester Mansion and See It Again are in the contest along with the defending Summer Cup winner, Royal Victory.
Murphy has 4 rides on Summer Cup day in total, a cap that was agreed to by the British Champion as he only rides up until the main event and leaves for the UK after the race due to a tight flight schedule and further engagements,
