'The Championships' Brings together 7 Grade 1 races & 4 Big Days

The 2025 Gauteng Summer Horseracing Season was officially launched today at Turffontein Racecourse, with 4Racing unveiling its plans in the newly refurbished Centenary Room. This year’s event promises an action-packed showcase featuring South Africa’s only Triple Crown and Triple Tiara series, drawing the nation’s top thoroughbreds to the track.

'The Championships' 2025 Kicks Off with Guineas Day

The season begins on February 1 with Guineas Day, the first of four high-profile race meetings under 'The Championships' 2025 banner. Fans, punters, and owners can expect a thrilling spectacle as South Africa’s leading three-year-olds battle for supremacy.

Wilgerbosdrift continues its sponsorship of the Triple Tiara, headlined by the R750,000 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas (Gr 2). Among the contenders are Quid Pro Quo, VJ’s Angel, and the rising star Spumante Dolce, all aiming to join the illustrious list of past winners, including Gimme A Nother (2024), Lady Of Power (2023), and Rain In Holland (2022).

Meanwhile, the first leg of the Triple Crown, the R1 million Gauteng Guineas (Gr 2) is a key event and will feature a fierce contest between several standout runners, including Fire Attack from the Alec Laird yard and Greaterix, trained by Mike de Kock.

A Season of Elite Racing

'The Championships' 2025 continues with:

Classic Day – March 1

Champions Day – March 29 (a World Pool event featuring four Grade 1 and four Grade 2 races)

'The Championships Finale' – April 26

4Racing CEO Fundi Sithebe emphasized the significance of these events in raising South Africa’s global horseracing profile. “Our partnerships with the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the World Tote Association reflect our mission to elevate South African racing internationally,” Sithebe stated.

She also highlighted the HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes’ inclusion in the World’s Top 100 Group 1 Races, a recognition that places South African racing alongside the world’s elite. “This achievement is a testament to the passion and talent within our industry,” she added.

SAHorseracing was first to publish that the Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings Committee, has placed this South African race in the world's top 100 - South Africa's Only top 100 race.
