Sandringham Summit Claims victory, ready for Distance test

If anything told us that Sandringham Summit is a July runner in the waiting, it was his victory in the Gr2 Hawaii Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday.

The 1400m, a distance patently short for the strong galloper, allowed the son of dam Townsend and by GimmeTheGreenlight a chance to warm up for the winter season ahead.

The champion 2 year old colt was all the rage in the betting at 9/10 and when he hit the front, it was race over. It wasn't all that easy though as he was niggled at throughout the contest to get into racing and responded throughout.

A fairly big bullish but beautiful looking horse, he definitely sees himself as a colt these days and is getting more unruly pre-race, which is a concern.

However, in running, the colt was classy but had to be waken up for the effort over this a distance too short for him. Cutting back from the 1800m, he was an easy winner against nothing that will take on in future, so was a class above.

The horse is screaming out for a more testing trip and there is nothing wrong with him attempting the Guineas and Daily News in Durban before taking on the July trip.

He has never shown any signs of not staying out the ground and should be given every opportunity to become the star South Africa sees in him.
