Rawiller Phelan Good About Perfect Slipper Ride

Victorian jockey Brad Rawiller turned in a masterful ride to win the richest juvenile race in the world – today's $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill.

Rawiller was aboard Queensland youngster Phelan Ready for Bruce and Jason McLachlan, and had the task of jumping from the extreme outside gate.

He took hold at the start and drifted back to last before crossing to the inside and biding his time.

With the pressure on up front and the majority of the field shying away from the fence in the heavy conditions, Rawiller saved many lengths on the inside and his charge sprinted quickly there.

Weaving between runners and showing a sensational turn of foot, he hit the front at the furlong pole and went on for a dominant 2-1/4 length win.

Victorian Headway ran on well from midfield out wide to second, while Manhattan Rain, who was close to the speed throughout, battled on well to hold third, ahead of the fast finishing favourite Real Saga.

Phelan Ready had won the rich Magic Millions on the Gold Coast earlier in the year but that prizemoney didn't count towards gaining a start in today's race so had to finish in the top two in the Todman Stakes.

With regular rider Jason Holder sidelined with an injury, Rawiller was given the job to qualify, which he did, finishing second behind Real Saga and scraping into the field.

But his effort from the outside gate was a ride to remember and gave the jockey his first success in the race.

“When he sprinted he picked them up that quickly I got to the front too soon,” Rawiller said. “It was a tremendous win and it's onwards and upwards from here.

Phelan Ready, a $150,000 Magic Millions buy, has now earned over $3 million in prizemoney in just five starts.
