Lady Of Camelot's racing career has ended following a stingray attack that ruled her out of last Saturday's Doomben 10,000. The 2024 Golden Slipper winner will bypass a planned Royal Ascot campaign and retire to Sir Owen Glenn's broodmare band.
Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the Written Tycoon mare raced 14 times for two wins and eight placings. Her victories both came during a stellar two-year-old campaign that delivered the Group 3 Widden Stakes before the $5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill.
Elite level consistency masked by win tally
Lady Of Camelot never won again after her Golden Slipper triumph, but her record hardly reflects a filly broken by Australia's premier juvenile contest. She ran second in the Blue Diamond, fourth in the 2024 $20 million The Everest won by Bella Nipotina, and third in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemingtonāall assignments that showcased her quality beyond her age.
Her 2025 autumn campaign delivered four consecutive minor placings against top-class opposition. After finishing third to Private Harry in The Sunlight on the Sunshine Coast, she ran second to Lady Shenandoah in three straight races: the Group 2 Light Fingers, Group 1 Surround Stakes, and Group 1 Coolmore Classic. That sequence prompted connections to spell her with Royal Ascot in mind.
Bott acknowledged the mare's achievements outweighed her win total. She won the pinnacle of Australian two-year-old racing and competed at the elite level throughout her career, he said, highlighting her toughness and talent. He noted she was unlucky in several major races when stretching out in distance but remained extremely brave.
Breeding career beckons for Glenn mare
Glenn's Go Bloodstock operation gains a Group 1-winning daughter of Written Tycoon with proven ability at the highest level. Bott said Glenn's passion for breeding made Lady Of Camelot a great addition to an already strong broodmare band.
The stingray incident that derailed her Doomben tilt ultimately accelerated retirement plans that would have been delayed only by a successful European campaign. Lady Of Camelot now joins the breeding ranks with a Golden Slipper, a Blue Diamond placing, and multiple Group 1 performances defining her legacy.
