Hoeberg: The filly who completed a four-generation global racing story

Hoeberg didn’t just build a strong record on paper — she produced one of the most complete and consistent campaigns by a South African filly in the early 2000s. She combined speed, stamina and tactical control in a way that allowed her to dominate from a mile to 2000 metres and beyond, while also proving she could travel and compete internationally.

Owned by Laurie Jaffee, trained by David Payne and ridden most often by Kevin Shea, she developed from a promising filly into a multiple Grade 1 winner who could control races at home before taking that ability onto the global stage.

But her story begins long before she ever set foot on a racetrack.

The foundation: Petrava

Petrava was not an obvious star when first assessed. She was described as plain and unremarkable, but her pedigree carried depth through Imposing, Silver Liner and Ajasco — a strong female line with proven class.

Once trained by David Payne, she quickly proved her ability. She developed into a top-class filly, winning multiple Group 1 races and being named Champion 3-year-old filly of her season. She retired with 10 wins, including four at the highest level.

She was later exported, sparking debate in South African breeding circles about losing elite mares overseas.

But her most important contribution came through her foals.

Jallad: the turning point

Among Petrava’s foals was a colt by Blushing Groom named Jallad.

Blushing Groom remains one of the most influential sires in modern Thoroughbred history:

Jallad’s early career in the UK showed promise, including a juvenile win at York, but breathing problems curtailed his progress. After surgery failed to fully resolve the issue, he was sold and later brought to South Africa on the belief that conditions might help him perform.

That decision changed everything.

In South Africa, he became a tough and versatile racehorse, winning multiple important races despite physical limitations. At stud, he became one of the most influential sires in modern South African racing.

The birth of Hoeberg

Petrava later continued her broodmare career in New Zealand, where she produced a Maroof filly in 1997.

That filly was later purchased and brought back to South Africa and named Hoeberg, after the Jaffee family home in Cape Town. She was placed with trainer David Payne, completing a full circle within the same system that had shaped Petrava’s success.

Early career development

Hoeberg’s early runs showed ability rather than dominance. Her first significant hint of class came in a narrow defeat over 1400 metres at Greyville. After that, her progress accelerated.

Once stepped up in distance, she began to control races rather than simply compete in them.

Golden Slipper breakthrough

Her first major success came in the Grade 2 Golden Slipper over 1600 metres. She did not win easily, but showed composure and strong finishing ability to edge out Child Model.

That performance confirmed she could quicken when required and sustain her effort under pressure.

Cape Fillies Guineas: defining performance

The Grade 1 Cape Fillies Guineas at Kenilworth marked her breakthrough at elite level. She faced a strong field including Alpha Centauri, Lite Spark, Trojan Belle and Origami.

Hoeberg travelled smoothly, took control when needed and accelerated clear to win by 3.5 lengths. The impression was of a filly operating at a different level.

From that point, she became the standard in her division.

Paddock Stakes: proving class against older mares

In the Grade 1 Paddock Stakes over 1800 metres, she faced older mares including Cover Look, Mythical Play and Autumn Lodge.

She adapted, travelled strongly and finished with authority, confirming she was no longer limited to her own generation. She emulated her dam by winning the race her dam once one - a first for this race.

Versatility and range

Hoeberg was effective from 1600 to 2000 metres, combining speed and stamina without compromise. At 2000 metres she remained strong and competitive, a rare trait among fillies of her generation.

Beating colts in open company

In open company over 1600 metres, she defeated colts including Johnny B Goode and Desert Dance, showing tactical intelligence and toughness.

Consistency under pressure

Her SA Fillies Guineas win reinforced her reliability. As favourite, she delivered a controlled performance and did what was expected without complication.

The Durban July

Her run in the Durban July over 2200 metres came late in a demanding campaign and proved a step too far against older males in open handicap company.

International career

Hoeberg’s career expanded internationally.

In Singapore, she won a Group 3 event, the Singapore Classic, adapting smoothly to local conditions.

In Dubai, she ran third in the Dubai Duty Free, competing strongly against elite international milers.

She also ran in the Singapore Airlines International Cup, where her race was affected by interference after a fall disrupted the contest.

In Australia, she finished second in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes behind Lonhro.

Final legacy

Hoeberg represents the completion of a four-generation arc:

  • Silver Liner and Ajasco established the foundation
  • Petrava elevated it to Group 1 level
  • Jallad transformed it into a major sire influence
  • Hoeberg confirmed its international class on the track

She won multiple Grade 1 races, defeated her own generation and older mares, beat colts in open company, and proved effective from a mile to 2000 metres.

Her greatest strength was consistency. Even when not at peak performance, she remained competitive at the highest level.

Kevin Shea said of her, "She was a top class filly trained by the master, David had a lot of success with the mother and the father, owned by the true legend of racing Mr Jaffee."

Hoeberg was first offered at the Inglis Broodmare Sale in 2003, where she was passed in at A$1 million before later being sold to Winstar Farm in the United States. She went on to produce a few foals (including Chillin Pretty by El Prado who was sold as a broodmare to Saudi Arabian interests), although none went on to make a significant impact on the track.

Hoeberg has since died, closing the chapter on a mare whose value lay as much in her elite racing career and international reach as in her later stud record.

Hoeberg was not just a champion filly — she was the final confirmation of a bloodline that succeeded across generations and continents.
