Lemos De Souza Banned for 18 Months After Pacific Power Fall in Malaysia

Veteran jockey Lemos “Lai Lai” De Souza has been hit with a hefty 18-month suspension and a RM50,000 fine, equivalent to approximately US$10,600 or R193,000, following a dramatic inquiry into his fall from favourite Pacific Power in Kuala Lumpur earlier this month.

The ruling came on Monday, 15 days after the July 6 incident at the Selangor Turf Club, where De Souza was dislodged from the heavily-backed runner mid-race. While the jockey escaped serious injury, stewards opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall, citing concerns over his riding tactics and safety breaches.

After reviewing race footage and hearing testimony, officials deemed De Souza’s actions "reckless and unbecoming of a senior rider," issuing one of the stiffest penalties handed down in Malaysian racing in recent years. The specifics of the charge have not been fully detailed publicly, but insiders say the severity of the punishment reflects not just the incident itself, but the rider’s history and the high-profile nature of the race.

De Souza, a well-known figure on the Asian circuit with stints in Macau, Singapore, and Malaysia, has not publicly commented on the suspension. It’s unclear whether he intends to appeal the decision, but the length of the ban effectively sidelines him for the remainder of the 2025 season and beyond.

The Selangor Turf Club has taken a firmer stance on safety and integrity issues in recent months, and this case may serve as a turning point in how similar incidents are handled moving forward.

Racing fans and participants alike will be watching closely to see whether De Souza makes a return—or if this dramatic chapter marks the end of his riding career in the region.
