Rachel Venniker Faces Injury Setback but Eyes a Strong Comeback

SAHorseracing caught up with talented jockey Rachel Venniker following a recent injury that has temporarily sidelined her. Despite the painful blow, Rachel remains focused, grounded, and as determined as ever to make a strong return to the saddle.

Freak Fall at the Starting Gates

The injury happened last Friday morning during a schooling session. Rachel was guiding a horse through the starting gates when things went unexpectedly wrong. “As the horse jumped out, she did a little fly jump and jinked to the right. I lost my balance and fell to the side—it was a soft fall, but unfortunately, I struck my shin on the curb that divides the grass and sand tracks,” Rachel explained.

Tibia Fracture and Immediate Surgery

Medical checks confirmed a clean break of the tibia—the large bone in the lower leg. She underwent surgery the same afternoon. “They inserted a pin from my knee down to my ankle, secured with screws above the ankle and below the knee,” she said.

A Waiting Game: Recovery Timeline

Recovery, as always, depends on how quickly the bone heals. “The tibia is one of those bones that tends to take its time. The doctor reckons it might be six months, but if things go well, it could be sooner,” Rachel shared.

Mentally Tough, Spirit Still Bright

Though the pain was intense right after surgery, Rachel’s staying positive. “The care at Hillcrest Hospital was outstanding. Since being discharged, the pain has been manageable. I’m just focusing on the present and grateful I can still see the horses,” she said.

Support from All Sides

Rachel credits her strong support network for keeping her spirits up. “My parents are always behind me. My best friend Jamie Rusk has been amazing, and Michael Roberts has been a huge support—his experience in racing and dealing with injuries really helps. I also have a great medical team with a sports background, so my rehab is in good hands.”

Eyes Locked on the Future

Rachel’s motivation hasn’t taken a hit. “Once I’m healed, it’s back to business. I want to ride as many winners as possible. I’ll come back hungry, focused, and ready to keep improving.”

Even while sidelined, Rachel’s mindset is that of a champion. And when she returns, it’s clear she’ll be riding with even more fire.
