Joburg’s Big Gr1 Earns Spot Among World's Top 100 Races

The 2024 World's Top 100 Group 1 races have been unveiled, and South Africa's representation this year comes from an unexpected source: Turffontein's Gr1 Horse Chestnut Stakes. Rated among the best global racing events, this marks the first time a Johannesburg-based race has achieved such recognition, cementing its status as a rising force on the international stage.

Out of the 106 races that made the list (due to a nine-way tie for 98th place), 11 countries were represented, with Australia leading the charge with 30 races. The United Kingdom followed with 20, Japan with 13, and France and the United States tied at 11. Notably, South Africa’s sole inclusion underscores the increasing competitiveness of its racing scene, even as the Durban July, Cape Met, and Gold Challenge—longtime staples of South African racing prestige—missed out this year.

The Gr1 Horse Chestnut Stakes’ elevation into the world’s elite marks a pivotal moment for Johannesburg racing. Once overshadowed by races in Durban and Cape Town, Turffontein now carries the torch for South Africa, showcasing the quality of talent and organization within Gauteng’s racing sphere.
