Veteran trainer Donna Logan is set to make a triumphant return to New Zealand, resuming her training career after seven successful years in Singapore. Logan’s first runners will compete at Ruakaka on Tuesday, the Northland venue where her illustrious training career began.
A New Base at Byerley Park
Following the cessation of racing in Singapore on October 5, Logan chose to base her operation at Byerley Park in South Auckland rather than her former Ruakaka base. The decision was driven by practicality and logistics.
“Byerley Park was a very good option,” Logan said. “Ellerslie isn’t far, and that is where the money is. The airport is close, so if we are good enough, we can go overseas. They were big attractions.”
While Logan has fond memories of Ruakaka, the demands of travel from the Northland township influenced her decision. “I loved Ruakaka and had a wonderful time training there, but after the convenience of Singapore, I wasn’t keen on resuming such heavy travel,” she explained.
First Runners Back on Familiar Turf
Logan is delighted to debut her first two runners at Ruakaka, a twist of fate that brings her full circle. Likava and White Mask, both owned by Westbury Stud principal Gerry Harvey, are set to make their mark.
“Gerry is amazing. He supports so many people in New Zealand, and I’m very grateful for his backing,” Logan said.
Four-year-old Likava will debut in the Northland Business Systems (1200m), while White Mask, a promising three-year-old, will contest either the Wangaripo Valley Free Range Egg Cup Race (1400m) or the Lion Red (1400m). Logan is confident in their potential but sees room for improvement as they progress.
Reunited with Istataba
Logan is also thrilled to have her Singapore standout, Istataba, back in her stable. The Argentina-bred mare, a dual Singapore Gold Cup placegetter, has already earned more than S$536,000 in prizemoney.
“Istataba arrived on December 20, and she will be set for New Zealand’s Cups staying races,” Logan shared. “She’s a class performer, and I’m excited about her future here.”
A Fresh Start with Familiar Surroundings
After nearly a decade away, Logan is relishing the opportunity to train amid New Zealand’s natural beauty. “We didn’t realize how much we missed the green paddocks, lawns, and trees until we came back,” she said.
As Logan embarks on this new chapter, her blend of experience and ambition promises to reinvigorate her career on home soil. With strong support from owners and a solid base at Byerley Park, she looks well-placed to make an impact on New Zealand racing once again.
