Bluestocking Claims Arc after Brilliant Performance

Juddmonte’s Bluestocking (GB), a 4-year-old filly by Camelot (GB), rewarded her connections' bold decision on Sunday by securing a brilliant win in the 103rd Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1) at ParisLongchamp.

Bluestocking was supplemented into the Arc for €120,000 (US$132,000), a gamble that paid off as she also secured her place in the $5 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series: Win and You’re In.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series includes 82 races worldwide, offering winners guaranteed entry and fees paid into a corresponding race at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will be held Nov. 1-2 at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in California.

The Arc, Europe’s premier race, was the highlight of a day packed with five Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series events at ParisLongchamp.

Bluestocking has had a strong season, winning the Cairn Community Games Pretty Polly Stakes (G1) and putting in commendable efforts in top races like the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes (G1) and the Juddmonte International Stakes (G1), before clinching the Qatar Prix Vermeille (G1) last month at ParisLongchamp. After that victory, trainer Ralph Beckett and Juddmonte took a risk by entering her in the Arc, a move that was richly rewarded.

Positioned perfectly by jockey Rossa Ryan from an inside draw of 3, Bluestocking tracked Los Angeles (IRE) early in the race before making her decisive move entering the home straight. Few horses from behind could challenge, leaving Aventure (FR) to chase down the leading pair. While Aventure narrowed the gap, Bluestocking was never truly threatened. Los Angeles finished third, with Sosie (IRE) taking fourth, in a race that favored those up front.

Beckett, who had narrowly missed out on Arc glory last year when Westover (GB) finished second, described this victory as his career highlight.

"It’s incredible to have a horse who started in May and competed at this level all season, then comes here and wins just three weeks after a tough race in the Vermeille. She’s an exceptional horse. This is our greatest day, no doubt," Beckett said. "Juddmonte is a fantastic operation to work with—there’s never any pressure."

Following her Arc win, bookmakers slashed Bluestocking’s odds for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf to 2-1, from 8-1. Beckett mentioned they would assess her condition post-race before making any firm plans with Juddmonte’s Barry Mahon.

Bluestocking, who went off at 11-2 odds, completed the 1 1/2-mile Arc in 2:31.58 on a soft track.
