Economics Set for Irish Champion Stakes

The Irish Champion Stakes, established in 1976, is Ireland's premier flat race and one of the most prestigious races globally. Over the years, it has hosted some iconic duels, including the 2001 clash between Fantastic Light and Derby winner Galileo. Two years later, High Chaparral triumphed in a fierce battle against Falbrav and Islington, further solidifying Leopardstown’s place in racing history.

Some of the greatest names in racing have graced the Irish Champion Stakes. Dylan Thomas was the first horse to win the race twice, a feat matched by the mare Magical in 2019 and 2020. Sea The Stars' 2009 victory is often regarded as one of the most remarkable performances during his unbeaten Classic season. While the quality of the field can fluctuate from year to year, the race remains a highlight on the racing calendar.

This year, however, the absence of stars like City of Troy and Calandagan diminishes some of the race's appeal. City of Troy is preparing for the Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar, while Calandagan will focus on the Champion Stakes at Ascot. Their absence opens the door for the current favorite, Economics, to shine, though it also reflects a lack of depth in the competition.

Economics, a lightly raced but unbeaten three-year-old trained by William Haggas, has shown promise with impressive victories in the Dante Stakes and the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano. However, his cautious campaign, with only four lifetime starts, has led some to question whether he’s fully prepared for the leap to Group One competition. The step up in class will test whether his potential translates to success against more seasoned runners.

Another notable contender is Auguste Rodin, a multiple Group One winner, though his form has been inconsistent. The son of Japan’s legendary Deep Impact, Auguste Rodin has struggled with ground conditions and various setbacks this season. While his recent performances have been mixed, Leopardstown’s drying conditions may suit him, allowing him to recapture the form that made him a top-class competitor earlier in his career.
