Kyprios Proves A Cut Above In Second Goodwood Cup

Tuesday saw Kyprios (6h Galileo – Polished Gem, by Danehill) win the Goodwood Cup for a second time, marking a sixth Group 1 success for the Aidan O’Brien-trained entire.

The son of Galileo was last seen making it three from three this season in the Group 1 Ascot Gold Cup and was sent off a short-priced favourite as he dropped back to two miles under Ryan Moore. Chasing the leaders for much of the way, he was pushed along to lead from two furlongs out and began to extend his advantage a furlong later. Ridden out, he kept on well to win the £500,000 feature by four lengths.

Ryan Moore later revealed his mount slipped on the top bend. “It put him on the back foot a little bit down the hill,” he continued. “I wasn't able to control the race as well as I'd have liked, but he's just better than them, that's the whole story. He's a level above. It's a tremendous performance and he's been a great horse for a long time now. His record is incredible.”

“Kyprios is a very special horse,” added O’Brien. “He has so much class, he's really going along in second gear. He went through very tough times and he's so genuine. He wears his heart on his sleeve every single day.”

O’Brien nominated the Irish Leger as Kyprios’s next target, a race his full-sister Search For A Song (Galileo) won twice. The son of Galileo is owned by breeder Moyglare Stud Farm with Coolmore partners and Westerberg.
