Murphy wins 4th British Title - South Africa bound

Soon to be South African bound, Oisin Murphy, who is set to ride Frances Ethel in the Betway Summer Cup at Turffontein in late November, was awarded his fourth Champion Flat Jockey title at Ascot on Saturday. The 29-year-old reclaimed the crown he previously won in 2019, 2020, and 2021, wrapping up the season with an impressive 163 winners, finishing more than 50 ahead of runner-up Rossa Ryan.

Murphy's season highlights include a memorable Group 1 double at Royal Ascot, where he piloted Australian contender Asfoora to victory in the King Charles III Stakes and steered Khaadem to win the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes.

After missing out on the 2022 season due to a 14-month suspension, Murphy placed second behind William Buick in 2023, making this year’s victory even more significant.

Reflecting on his triumph, Murphy said, “This was something I was determined to achieve this year. I’ve had tremendous support from trainers and owners, and having a solid lead allowed me to enjoy the last stretch of the season.”

Murphy credited his agent, Gavin Horne, for playing a crucial role in his success, highlighting the importance of selecting the right meetings under the one-meeting-a-day rule. "It's high pressure when you go racing every day with a real chance, and it can be frustrating when things don’t go your way, but thankfully, I had strong performances at Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood, and York."

Looking ahead, Murphy said he still has major targets in mind. “There are a few big races I haven’t won yet. The two that stand out are the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and the Derby. The Arc has massive international appeal now, and the Derby is steeped in history.”
