Kentucky Derby (G1) winner of 2022, the longshot stretch running Rich Strike has resumed training, hinting at a potential return to the racetrack. The Keen Ice colt left Margaux Farm in Midway, Kentucky, on June 21 and arrived at Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott's barn at Saratoga Race Course the next morning, as confirmed by owner Rick Dawson.
Mott told the Daily Racing Form on June 24, "He looks pretty good, galloped him the last two days and he went quite well. He's been cantering and galloping at the farm, but I'm sure we're going to probably put a little more pressure on him than they have been."
However, Mott noted that Dawson is realistic about Rich Strike's chances of returning, estimating them at 50-50 due to potential soundness issues. Dawson explained that Rich Strike had been sidelined by various leg issues, though he was cleared by renowned equine surgeon Dr. Larry Bramlage earlier this month.
Rich Strike was claimed for $30,000 by Dawson and trainer Eric Reed in September 2021, from his second career start. Reed famously trained him for his stunning 80-1 victory in the Kentucky Derby. However, Reed resigned after Rich Strike's fifth-place finish in the May 5, 2023, Alysheba Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs, following a dispute over film rights.
