AUSSIES RULE IN KING CHARLES STAKES

The race may have a new name, but the outcome was familiar as an Australian raider claimed victory in the inaugural King Charles III Stakes. Asfoora, ridden by Oisin Murphy, surged late to secure the win, marking the sixth time an Australian horse has triumphed in this race. This race is a Breeders' Cup challange series event with direct entry to the Turf Sprint.

The trend began with Choisir in 2003, followed by Takeover Target (2006), Miss Andretti (2007), Scenic Blast (2009), and Nature Strip (2022), all in what was previously known as the King's Stand. The new title did nothing to break this pattern.

In the early stages, Asfoora raced in the smaller group on the stands' side, led by Regional, while Big Evs led the field up the center. As the race progressed, the stands' side group, now headed by Asfoora, drifted toward Big Evs. Ultimately, Asfoora powered through to win comfortably. Murphy, the winning jockey, expressed his joy: "I'm thrilled for connections. It's brave to come from Australia with all the travel, and how good was she? Regional gave me the perfect tow halfway. She lugged right for company late on, but she was superb at the line. Winning a Group 1 on day one, I'm over the moon."

Though not top-ranked among Australian sprinters, Asfoora, a dual Group 2 winner twice placed at the highest level back home, was identified by trainer Henry Dwyer as a good traveler. He brought her over early to acclimatize.

Despite a disappointing fourth place at Haydock in the Temple Stakes, Asfoora thrived on the quicker surface, winning by one length from 6-1 shot Regional, with 11-4 favorite Big Evs in third and Believing finishing fourth at 9-1.

This victory was particularly special for owner Akram El-Fahkri, a Melbourne taxi firm boss of Lebanese origin, visiting Europe for the first time to watch his star mare race.
